Ask Us Anything: Your Interior Design Business Questions

Ask Us Anything: Your Interior Design Business Questions

Posted by BBH Staff on

As designers, we know the power of exchanging firsthand experience with our peers. Over the years, we’ve certainly benefited from the advice of others and shared plenty of hard-earned wisdom of our own. Here on The Edit, we want to open that dialogue with you, our readers, and answer the questions that come up in the real work of interior design. When someone is willing to ask the question everyone else has been thinking, we all benefit.

Ask Dwayne & Kyle

Ask Dwayne & Kyle is your opportunity to submit the questions that arise in the day-to-day work of running an interior design business. That might mean navigating a complex client situation, making a difficult business decision, correcting a mistake on a custom piece or improving profitability.

Sometimes, a gut check on a decision you’ve been second-guessing can give you the confidence to trust your instincts and move forward. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, “How is everyone else handling this?” you’re in the right place.

What Designers Want to Know

We’re often invited to speak on panels and share interior design business advice on topics ranging from scaling a design firm and improving profitability to custom design, sourcing, product development, client relationship management, pipeline flow and building a luxury brand. Those are just some of the areas designers are most curious about, and we’re here to address them.

Mistakes Happen

With decades of experience between us, there’s very little we haven’t encountered and learned to overcome. That doesn’t mean we have it all figured out. We’ve made our fair share of mistakes, but we’ve learned from them, and we hope you can too.

Some of the best advice we can offer comes from the stories behind those hard-earned lessons. By reflecting on them, we’ve been able to understand where we went wrong and how we would approach the same situation differently next time.

Let’s Hear It

Through this channel, we plan to share our experience and expertise, but consider this your invitation to ask for specifics. Maybe you’re wondering how to price your interior design services more profitably, when it’s time to hire and grow your team, or how to protect your margins when the scope of a project changes.

Perhaps you want advice on managing difficult clients, setting boundaries, working more efficiently with vendors or introducing custom designs without creating an operational nightmare. Whatever is on your mind, chances are there’s another designer wondering the same thing. So ask away.

Submit your question using the email button below, then keep an eye on The Edit for future answers. Think of it as an open door to two fellow designers who have been at this a long time and are more than happy to talk shop.

Go ahead. We’re listening.
